Myles Kennedy on SA: I was just blown away with the people and the beauty

Cape Town – Boston born musician Myles Kennedy is coming back to South Africa for a very unique tour which includes two exclusive shows - one in Cape Town and one in Pretoria - during March 2018.

The event, which is called An Evening with Myles Kennedy, will take place at the Grand Arena, GrandWest in Cape Town on 6 March and at the Sun Arena, Time Square, Menlyn in Pretoria on 10 March 2018. Tickets will be available from R395 through Computicket.

Ahead of the duo of shows we gave Myles a call and spoke to him about South Africa, his favourite pair of boots and why he keeps making music.

HERE'S OUR CHAT WITH AMERICAN MUSICIAN MYLES KENNEDY:

"A pretty memorable experience"

I got the opportunity to perform there (in South Africa) a couple of years ago with a band called the Kings of Chaos, it was a pretty memorable experience to say the least. It was my first opportunity to travel to that part of the world. I was just blown away with the people and the beauty; especially the kind of experiences we had. We had the opportunity to swim with great white sharks and see elephants, things that we don’t get to do in this part of the world.

"Music is oxygen for me"

You know my love for music is the driving force for me. Music is oxygen for me, I can’t fathom life without it. And having the opportunity to make music and create music and perform music and hopefully make people happy; that’s something that I don’t take lightly and that I work out. I feel like as long as I am able to convey the power of music I’ll be out there trying to do it.

"Music is sometimes very specific to certain parts of the world"

I certainly would love to try and discover music when I am there (in South Africa), that’s something I love to do because music is sometimes very specific to certain parts of the world. Obviously, there’s the internet now but there’s something special about hearing music in the environment in which it was created. So, I always have my ears to the ground.

"Lucky pair of black boots"

A good attitude is what I always take on tour with me (laughs). Other than that, probably the one thing I always take on tour with me – it might be kind of boring – but I always take my laptop to document my ideas. I also have this lucky pair of black boots; I’m a little superstitious about not taking them on the road but they were falling apart so I had to retire them.

"I never really know when the inspiration is going to hit me."

It’s one of those things where I never really know when the inspiration is going to hit me. Last night is the best example of that, I went to bed, I was about to fall asleep and suddenly I had this melody and this chord progression that would leave me along and I was thinking: ‘Oh no, not now I was just beginning to fall asleep and I want to get some rest I have press in the morning and I don’t want to be tired (laughs). But then I was like: ‘Some of your best stuff has come at this time when you’re switching off…you kind of let your subconscious do the work for you.’ So yeah, I got my phone out and recorded the idea before I forgot it.
